The biological approach attempts to explain behaviour in terms of different biological processes, including genes, hormones, neurotransmitters. Behaviour can be affected by brain physiology and chemical imbalances.
1 of 9
Evolution
A gradual change within a species in response to environmental pressures.
2 of 9
Natural Selection
Offspring inherit characteristics that lead to having a survival advantage. Overtime most members of the species come to possess the same adaptive characteristics.
3 of 9
Phenotype
Is an expression of a person's genetic make-up (genotype) that can be influenced by the environment.
4 of 9
Genotype
The genotype is a person's unique genetic make-up that is coded in their chromosomes
5 of 9
Synaptic Transmission
Where nerve impulses are carried across the synapse between one neuron and another. The nerve impulse is an electrical signal carried by neurotransmitters.
6 of 9
Synapse
A junction between two nerve cells, consisting of a small gap which impulses pass by diffusion of neurotransmitters.
7 of 9
Neurotransmitter
Chemical messengers that carry signal to other cells. Can directly influence behaviour e.g. dopamine.
8 of 9
Fight or Flight
A physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of danger, either mentally/physically. The response is triggered by the release of hormones that prepare your body to deal with a threat or by running away.
