What is devleopment
Where the zygote becomes a multicellular organism composed of trillions of cells, has specialised functions.
1 of 21
Devvelopment is a combination of 2 things:
Differentiation and morphogenesis.
2 of 21
What is morphogenesis?
The processes which shape the cell
3 of 21
Development is cell biology in action, what type of stuff will be covered?
Cell proliferation (cell cycle), cell death (apoptsis) changes in cell shape/cell movement (cytoskeleton), positional (information cell signalling.)
4 of 21
What are good model organisms?
Nematode, fruit fly, zebra fish, african clawd toad, chicken, mouse
5 of 21
What are the early processes that happen during early development? Amphibian
Fertilization, cleavage (the cells get smaller and smaller in size),
6 of 21
What is ZPA?
Zone of polarising Activity
7 of 21
What does ZPA do
Secretes a morphagen that diffuses across the limb bud,
8 of 21
Where are ZPA morphagen concs highest.
Highest on the posterior side, and lowest on the anterior
9 of 21
How does the kidney develop?
The tubular epithelium arises from a little bud in the embryonic kidney. There is a mesenchyme cell. As the bud begins to branch, the mesenchyme bud starts to trnasition to tubular epithelial cells. Organised into a tubular cell, fusing with the bud
10 of 21
What induces the branching process?
The bud
11 of 21
What is the Ret RTK required for?
Kidney development
12 of 21
If you knock out the Ret gene, what do you get?
You get ureters but they are blind ended.
13 of 21
What does the Ret gene express?
Receptor tyrosine kinase
14 of 21
Where is the receptor tyrosine kinase expressed?
On the top of the ureteric bud
15 of 21
Ret is the ...
Receptor for the signal of kideny formation
16 of 21
When does the bud not branch?
In GDNF, GDNFR or Ret knockout
17 of 21
Where does the GDNF made from?
The mesenchyme
18 of 21
GDNFR is a co receptor for..
GDNR
19 of 21
How is the GNFR a attached?
By a GPI anchor
20 of 21
What is the ureteric bud signal?
Leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF)
