What do we do in science?
Formulate a decision between two or more hypotheses.
1 of 12
What is a null hypothesis?
The mean hight of 2 year old jamaican boys in 86.5cm.
2 of 12
What is an alternative hypothesis?
The mean height of 2 year old jamaican boys is not 86.5cm
3 of 12
What do we do to pro/disprove hyptoheses?
Start by assuming H0. Find evidence againtt H0, If enough evidence, refute H0 and conclude HA.
4 of 12
How do we calculate the Cl?
Mean +- 1.96 x SE
5 of 12
What is the SE?
It is S/Square root of (n)
6 of 12
When is a p value a 2 tailed test?
Ahen a sample statistic is compared agaisnt a null hypothesis
7 of 12
What is the p-value?
It is the measure of strength of evidence against H0.
8 of 12
When is a p value a one tailed test?
When we are restricted to a directional question. E.g. are Jamaican boys shorter than british boys.
9 of 12
What does a p value do?
It gives the probability of observing a statistic at least as extreme as the one you have calculated asuming H0 is true.
10 of 12
The smaller the p value, the...
greater the evidence against the null hypothesis
11 of 12
How should a p value be judged?
In the context of the experiment, the statistic of interest, the hypotheses a significance level.
