What is meant by species diversity?
The number of different species and the number of individuals of each species within one COMMUNITY.
1 of 11
What is genetic diversity?
The variety of genes possessed by individuals that make up any one species.
2 of 11
What is ecosystem diversity?
Refers to the range of different habitats within a particular area.
3 of 11
What is the effect of a farmer selecting species with particular qualities?
The number of species and the genetic variety of alleles they possess is reduced to the few that exhibit desired features.
4 of 11
What does it mean if an area is taken up by one species?
There is a smaller area for other species which will compete for space and resources. Many will not survive this competition, reducing species diversity.
5 of 11
Is the species diversity of agricultural ecosystems more likely to be high or low?
Low.
6 of 11
What is the species diversity of extreme environments?
Low.
7 of 11
What is the species diversity of a rain-forest?
High.
8 of 11
What is a serious consequence of deforestation?
Loss of biodiversity.
9 of 11
Explain why replacing lowland mixed woodlands with other woodland might result in lower species diversity.
Mixed woodland comprise many species while the other woodland may contain a large number of a single species.
10 of 11
Suggest one benefit and one risk associated with the conversion of hay meadows and chalk grasslands to highly productive grass and silage.
More efficient food production but loss of species diversity.
