Bio 1 flashcards

?
What is meant by metabolic rate?
rate of all chemical reactions in the body
1 of 26
What is the function of fat in the body?
stored energy
2 of 26
what is function of vitamins and minerals?
to maintain health
3 of 26
what affects metabolic rate?
proportion muscle to fat, exercise, genes
4 of 26
Health problems obesity can cause?
type 2 diabetes, High blood pressure, heart disease
5 of 26
what are deficiency diseases due to?
lack of vitamins and minerals
6 of 26
what are the 2 types of cholesterol?
when people are born with high cholesterol (inheritred), other is hwen people eat a lot of high fat foods
7 of 26
How can a person become malnurished as a result of an unbalanced diet?
amount energy taken in is more/less than amount energy being used so person gains/loses weight
8 of 26
why does exercise keep you healthy?
more muscle tissue so increased metabolic rate, use more energy, lowers cholesterol
9 of 26
3 types of microorganisms?
bacteria, viruses, fungi
10 of 26
what are pathogens?
the 'microorganisms' that cause disease
11 of 26
How do bacteria cause disease once they have entered the body?
produce toxins that damage cells
12 of 26
How do viruses cause disease once they have entered the body?
viruses take over cells, splitting them
13 of 26
what is the white blood cells response to bacteria/virus?
some ingest microorganisms, some produce antibodies which kill microorganisms, some produce antitoxins which counteract toxins produced by bacteria
14 of 26
differnce between an ANTIGEN and ANTIBODY?
antigen-on surface of cells with specific shape antibody- produced by white blood cell with matching specific shape
15 of 26
what does the vaccination MMR stand for?
Measles, mumps and rubella
16 of 26
How can a vaccine prevent disease?
Dead/inactive pathogen injected, white blood cells produce antibodies against specific pathogen's antigens, memory cells created, if live microorganism infect body white blood cells produce antibodies rapidly
17 of 26
what was the correlation between doctors washing their hands and the death rate of mothers decreasing?
when doctors washed their hands they killed bacteria that was infecting the patients
18 of 26
which doctor discovered this?
semmelweis
19 of 26
which doctor discovered penicillin?
flemming
20 of 26
How does bacteria develop resistance?
mutations (change in genes) of bacteria produce new strains of bacteria by natural selection
21 of 26
why can antibiotics kill bacteria cells but not viruses?
because it is difficult to produce drugs that kill viruses without damaging cells of your body as well
22 of 26
what is MRSA?
a type of bacterium that has become resistant to antibiotics by natural selection
23 of 26
How can we reduce the spread of microorganisms such as MRSA?
only using antibiotics when necessary, specific bacteria treated with specific antibiotics, medical staff + visitors wash hands, patients affected with antibiotic resistant bacteria treated in isolation
24 of 26
sum up the nervous system process:
receptor-sensory neurone-coordinator(CNS)/relay neurone-motor neurone-effector
25 of 26
Where do we have receptors?
skin, ears,
