The study investigated people’s responses to a range of 29 small, harmless animal species
The participants were a sample of 113 patients at a local health clinic, who were randomly allocated to one of two questionnaires
1 of 5
Sixty-four participants (34 female & 30 male; mean age 35.5 years )completed Questionnaire 1
Forty-nine participants (25 female & 24 male; mean age 35.1 years) completed Questionnaire 2
2 of 5
Participants were informed that the animals listed were not harmful and this was written next to animals where there may be any doubt (e.g. Grass snake)
Questionnaire 1: Fear – participants rated how afraid they were of each species on a scale of 1-3 (1=not afraid; 2=quite afraid; 3=very afraid)
3 of 5
Questionnaire 1: Nearness – participants rated how they would respond to being close to each species on a scale of 1-5 (1=enjoy picking it up; 5=move further away than 6 feet ect)
As some animals would be difficult to pick up in the wild participants were asked to imagine the animal was injured, e.g. a bird with a broken wing

Questionnaire 2 asked about participants’ perceptions of the characteristics of the same 29 species as in Questionnaire 1
