What are phobias?
A type of anxiety disorder characterised by uncontrollable, extreme, irrational and enduring fears

What are the behavioural characteristics of phobias?
disruption of functioning, panic, avoidance, and endurance

What are the emotional characteristics of phobias?
anxiety, fear from exposure, unreasonable responses which are disproportionate to the danger posed by phobic stimulus

What are the cognitive characteristics of phobias?
selective attention, irrational beliefs, cognitive distortions

What is depression?
An affective mood disorder involving length disturbance of emotions: at least 5 symptoms must be apparent every day for 2 weeks to be diagnosed

What are the behavioural characteristics for depression?
Loss of energy, social impairment, changes in sleep (e.g. insomnia, increased need for sleep), changes in weight, aggression/ self harm

What are the emotional characteristics for depression?
Low mood, loss of enthusiasm, feelings of worthlessness

What are the cognitive characteristics for depression?
Poor memory, suicidal thoughts, reduced concentration, delusions (e.g. concerning guilt, personal inadequacy)

What is OCD?
An anxiety disorder: one experiences persistent and intrusive thoughts occurring as obsessions, compulsions or a combination of both

What are the behavioural characteristics of OCD?
Everyday functioning hindered, compulsions, social impairment, avoidance

What are compulsions?
Repetitive behavioural responses intended to neutralise the obsessions e.g. excessive hand washing

What are the emotional characteristics of OCD?
Guilt + disgust, extreme anxiety

What are the cognitive characteristics of OCD?
obsessive thoughts, recognises thoughts as self-generated, coping strategies, insight to excessive anxiety (aware compulsions are irrational)

What are obsessive thoughts?
Constantly repeated thoughts and ideas of an intrusive nature
