Bolles (1971)
classical conditioning theory - difficult but possible to train animals to perform avoidance responses that do not resemble any SSDR- better learning with instrumental conditioning combined
1 of 9
Miller- Mowrer, (1960)
two factor theory- CC works well but do need OC too- two process learning theory- reducing exposure to the classically conditioned warning signals is also rein
2 of 9
Kamin, (1956)
did a test of the Miller Mowrer theory - shuttle boxes, standard escape avoidance some evi learn, US avoidance couldnt term buz but avoid shock, CS termination term buz not shock and CC where responding had no effect on exposure to buzzer or shock
3 of 9
...
lots of learning in 1, less so in 2 and 3 and none in 4
4 of 9
Bolles et al., (1996)
all avoidance is not the same - if can only terminate signal or avoid shock mediocre levels of learning compared to being able to do both. Shuttle box version and then with running wheel highlight glitch in data cant say all avoidance is CC
5 of 9
Sidman, (1953)
animals can learn without an explicit warning signal - CS termination really matters- dont always need a tangible CS though- rather than light etc moving to other side of box delays next shock can learn without explicit signal
6 of 9
Soltysik et al., (1964, 1983)
Fear extinguished to CSb not to CSa. Stage 1- pair mild shock to two CRs, CI presented 2s after CSa and CSb no shock CI inhibit Cr for CSa and b. Stage 2- a and b no shock only CSa followed by C1, 3- fear cond a and b (measured as CR) with/out shock
7 of 9
...
CIs protect conditioned fear from extinction
8 of 9
Seligman and Maier, (1967)
clinical implications from learned helplessness- phase 1 shock escapable by instrumental response, 2- allowed to escape and or avoid shock in dif envi group exposed to inescapable learned poorly due to learned helplessness
