Battle for the Biosphere

?
What is a biome?
It is a global ecosystem - a community of plants and animals interacting with the non living physcial environment (rock, air, water)
1 of 21
What biome is usually found on either side of the equator?
The rainforest
2 of 21
Why is the rainforest found on either side of the equator?
Because it a very rich environment where wet and hot conditions encourage all-year round growth of plants
3 of 21
Deserts are found in the tropics. What conditions are there?
It is very dry and plants have to adapt to surive with deep roots and thick skins
4 of 21
What forest is found in high latitudes?
Temperate decidous forests - trees lose their leaves in the autumn to conserve energy
5 of 21
What biome dominates from 60degrees northwards for many hundreds of kilometres and it is cold in winter so the trees have evolved needle leaves and waxy resin to reduce heat and mositure loss.
Tagia

The type of Biome depends on differences in:
temperature and seasonality

The type of Biome depends on differences in:
Rainfall and seasonality

The type of Biome depends on differences in:
Altitude

If precipitation is quite high and distrubted fairly evenly throughout the year, what is the most important factor in biome location
Temperature because it depends wheter it freezes and the length of growing season (average temp needs to be 6degrees for plants to grow).
10 of 21
The hotter and wetter a biome, the more productive the ecosystem, with more species of both fauna and flora. True or false
True
11 of 21
Some major biomes are mainly controlled by:
amount and seasonal distubtion of rainfall
12 of 21
How does rainfall affect a biome?
The further inland from the sea you go - rainfall decreases. How much falls and when affects wheter a biome will be temperate rainforest, grassland or desert.
13 of 21
Altitude is considered a local factor. How does it affect biomes?
It controls temp/rainfall, Average temp falls by about 1degrees for every 200m of altitude.
14 of 21
Soils are important locally. Why?
Thin soils will not support much plant life and slopes and geology will influence this.
15 of 21
Services of the biosphere include:
Regulation of the climate (temp and rainfall patterns), regulation of atmosphereic gases(especially co2 and oxgyen), water regulation through controlling the flow of water, water purfication (water is filtered through the plants).
16 of 21
What goods does the bisphere provide us
Food (crops such as wheat, rice and maize), medicines(e.g quinine and this is a treatment for malaria), raw materials( water, timber)
17 of 21
What is a important source of timber
Forest Biomes
18 of 21
Finish the sentence: There is tension between the econmic development and
conserving the biosphere
19 of 21
What has economic development in the uK done to the biosphere
Major damage to the biosphere as forests were cleared, species wiped out and air polluted
20 of 21
The rate of deforestation in the amazon has slowed down but how much was destroyed in 2012?
4600km2
