battle for the biosphere

?
Ecosystem
a community of plants and animals that interact with the atmosphere, water and minerals as a system.
1 of 26
Biodiversity
the varied range of plants and animals found in an area.
2 of 26
Biome
a very large ecosystem. e.g rainforest.
3 of 26
Temperate Deciduous Forest
contain trees that lose leaves and are found across the UK and USA. Weather is mild and wet.
4 of 26
Coniferous Forest
contain evergreen trees and are found in Scandinavia, Russia and Canada.Have a cool climate and moderate rainfall
5 of 26
Tundra
surrounds the North and South poles. They have an extremely cold climate, with limited numbers of plants and animals able to survive there.
6 of 26
Hot Desert
driest and hottest of areas. The world's largest desert is the Sahara in North Africa. Areas of scrub land that border the desert are called desert scrub.

What Effects Distribution Of Biomes? ( globally) - Temps
-Temperature (latitude): Optimum temperatures are between 6 and 30 degrees and life thrives between these numbers. Temps decrease s you move further from the equator.
8 of 26
What Effects Distribution Of Biomes? ( globally) - Latitude
- Latitude: Angle of suns rays decrease as you get further from the equator.
9 of 26
What Effects Distribution Of Biomes? ( globally)- Precipitation
- Precipitation: Happens in low pressure belts. Air masses converge and air rises.
10 of 26
What Effects Distribution Of Biomes? ( locally )- Continentality
Continntality: Land is quick to cool and heat. Water is slow to heat and slow to cool. Greater temp extremes.
11 of 26
What Effects Distribution Of Biomes? ( locally)- Altitude
Altitude: Atmosphere is thinner at high altitude. Temps colder by 1 degree every 100m of altitude. Few plants grow at high due to cold.
12 of 26
Biosphere
Acts as a life support system and provides a range of goods and services e.g water and regulating atmosphere.
13 of 26
How Biosphere Regulates The Composition Of The Atmosphere
Plants absorb CO2 and produce O instead.
14 of 26
How Biosphere Maintains Soil Health
Dead plants and leaves add nutrients to the soil. Insects and animals burrow which helps the soil breathe.
15 of 26
How Biosphere Influences Hydro-logical Cycle
Trees and other plants slow the flow of rain waterto rivers acting as a flood control.
16 of 26
Goods and Services Of The Biosphere
Goods: crops, water, animals, natural medicines. Services: regulating atomosphere, maintaining health of soil.
17 of 26
Problems With Use Of Biosphere
Different people want different things and want the same biome in different ways. May cause damage to it if not used in sustainable way.
18 of 26
Ways Rainforest Biome Is Used
Logs, pulp wood, fuel wood, medicines, soil erosion control, charcoal.
19 of 26
Causes Of Deforestation
Immediate: logging, tourist pressures, pollution. Root: poverty and debt.
20 of 26
Effects Of Deforestation
Affects rates of flooding, soil erosion and humus formation.
21 of 26
Effect Of Climate Change On Biosphere
plants flowering early, bird migration patterns changing, arctic tundra warming rapidly, vegetation zones shifting.
22 of 26
RAMSAR
In 1971, 163 countries agreed to protect 196 million hectares of wetland. Protects from fishing, tourism etc
23 of 26
CITES
166 countries signed up to try and stop trade in ivory shoes, handbags etc and snake skin and fur trade.
24 of 26
National Parks
Protect large areas of countryside that are said to be of outstanding beauty. Protects from tourism.
25 of 26
Sustainable Management Of Biosphere
Conserves ecosystem for future generations. Kilum-Iijm:Ad: resevoir supports wildlife, ecotourism, tree cover reduces flood risks, maintains biodiversity. Di: population growth, tourism disrupt wildlife, charities stop helping.
