Basic features of waves

?
What is a wave?
Waves transfer energy from one plsce to another.
1 of 18
Displacement
The distance a mave moves a particle from it's rest postition.
2 of 18
Amplitude
Maximum displacement.
3 of 18
Wavelength
The distance between two similar points.
4 of 18
Periodic time
The time between two similar events.
5 of 18
Frequency
The number of complete cycles per second. (Frequency=1/time.
6 of 18
Transverse Wave
The displacement is at right angles to wave direction. (The wave moves up and down)
7 of 18
Longitudinal Wave
The displacement is parallel to the wave direction. (The wave moves back and forth)
8 of 18
Velocity Calculations.
Velocity=distance/time Velocity=frequency x wavelength
9 of 18
Pitch.
used to describe how high or low a note is.
10 of 18
Loudness.
Depends on the amplitude of the wave.
11 of 18
Quality (Tone)
Depends on the waveform.
12 of 18
Tuning fork.
Produces a single waveform.
13 of 18
Musical Instruments.
They consist of one main note which is predominant and other smaller notes called overtones.
14 of 18
Noise waveform.
The waveform isn't repeated.
15 of 18
Nodes and Antinodes.
A standing wave pattern always consists of an alternating pattern of Nodes and Antinodes.
16 of 18
Polarised light.
Light can only oscillate in one direction.
17 of 18
Unpolarised light.
Light can oscillate in all directions.
