Bandura's bobo doll study.

?
What were the theoretical origins of the study?
>based on social learning theory >human behaviour=enviromental and behavioural influences >agression learnt through models and observation >vicarious reinforcment helps strengthen learnt behaviour
1 of 17
What is the background of the study?
Bandura and Hudson showed children will imiate behaviour from an adult if they remain in the room. However, no research into what would happen if the adult left the room.
2 of 17
What was the aim of the study?
To demonstrate that learning can occur through mere observation of a model and that imitation of learned behaviour can occur in the abscence of a model.
3 of 17
What were the hypothesis' of the study?
1)children shown agressive models=more imitative agression 2) children shown non-agressive model=less agression 3)boys will show more imitative agression than girls 4)children imitate same sex models to higher degree.
4 of 17
What was the sample of the study?
72 children from Stanford university nursery. 36 boys and 36 girls. Age 37 to 69 months.
5 of 17
What was phase one of the procedure?
Children in experimental conditions taken into a room and sat at a table to play with potatoprints. Agressive model plays with tinker toy for one minute then agressively beats bobo doll (standardised procedure). Non-agressive model plays subdued.
6 of 17
What was phase two of the procedure?
Children taken into second room and subject to mild agressive arousal. Initially allowed to play with attractive toys after two minutes told these toys are reserved for other children and cant play.
7 of 17
What was phase 3 of the procedure?
Children individually taken into room that contains agressive and no agressive toys; children observed through one way mirror for 20 minutes.
8 of 17
What was measured by the observers?
>imitative agression >partial imitative agression. >no imitative agression >non-agressive behaviour.
9 of 17
What were the results of the study?
Children who saw agressive model=more agressive acts. boys made more agressive acts. Boys more agressive if model was male. Behaviour of a male model exerted greater influence.
10 of 17
What conclusions were gained from the study?
Children will imitate displayed behaviours if adult isn't present. Children learn behaviour through observation and imitation. Male adults have greater influence. Males and females more likely to learn agressive behaviour from male adult.
11 of 17
What other conclusion was made?
Boys and girls are more likely to learn verbal agression from a same sex adult.
12 of 17
What was the significance of allowing the children to play with the toys in room 2 then taking them away?
To allow a base level of frustration to act as a trigger for agression to take place in the next room.
13 of 17
Why did Bandura conduct a pre-test?
To ensure the agression levels were matched in each condition within the actual study.
14 of 17
How else could agression mean measured in the study?
Question children on feelings of agression to gain qualitative data or questionaire ratings 1-10?
15 of 17
What were the independant variables of the study?
1)condition the children were exposed to 2)Gender of the model 3)Gender of the child.
16 of 17
How were the independant variables controlled?
Slit by gender. Given different conditions.
