What was the aim of Bandura's study?
To investigate the effects on children of passive (observing) exposure to an aggressive model.
1 of 24
What was the IV in Bandura study?
The type of model: aggressive,non-agressive,control (no model).
2 of 24
Name the three DV's in Bandura Study?
Imitation of aggression in children (physical and verbal) behaviours.
3 of 24
What were the three measures (DV) that Bandura operationalised?
Imitative for physical aggression/Imitative verbal aggression/Imitative non-agressive verbal responses.
4 of 24
What method was Bandura's study?
Laboratory experiment (covert observation).
5 of 24
What experimental design did Bandura use? How were the participants matched?
Matched paires/On scales on natural agression, age and gender.
6 of 24
What type of sample was used in Bandura's study?
Opportunity sample.
7 of 24
How many participants was in Bandura's study? How old were the participants and mean age?
72 children aged (37-69 months)/Mean age was 53 months.
8 of 24
Where did Bandura allocate his participants?
Standford University (Nursery).
9 of 24
How were the participants divided into their subgroups?
All children were divided in three groups of 24/ 12 girls and 12 boys / from them the 12 / 6 girls with model / 6 girls without / same for the boys
10 of 24
What happened to the control condition?
The control did not have a model therefore the group was divided 12 boys / 12 girls.
11 of 24
What happened in stage 1 in Bandura's procedure?
Children were taken into a experimental room / contained toys: potato prints, pictures in corners for 10 minutes.
12 of 24
What happened in stage 1 in Bandura's procedure for the non-aggressive condition?
The model assembled the thinker toys in a quiet manner / ignoring bobo doll in the corner.
13 of 24
What happened in stage 1 in Bandura's procedure for the aggressive condition?
The model started to assemble the thinker toys/ After one minute/ Turned to bobo doll and was agressive.
14 of 24
What verbal and physical words were used in the aggressive condition?
Physical: raised bob, picked up mallet and struck it on the head / Verbal: 'POW' 'SOCK HIM ON THE NOSE'
15 of 24
What happened in stage 2 in Bandura's procedure?
All children were individually taken into another experimental room/ Subjected to mild aggression/Shown attractive toys: fire engine, jet fighter plane, dolls set with a wardrobe and baby crib/Were told they could play with them
16 of 24
What happened after 2 minutes into stage 2?
Experimenter told the children that the toys belonged to the experimenter and that they were not allowed to play with them.
17 of 24
Why did the experimenter not allow the children to play with the toys after 2 minutes?
Gave all groups an equal chance of showing aggression and also to allow the group shown the non-aggressive model to demonstrate agressive behaviour.
18 of 24
What happened in stage 3 in Bandura's procedure?
All children were taken into another room /Non-aggressive + aggressive toys available/Kept there for 20 minutes.
19 of 24
What type of toys were available to the children in stage 3?
Mallet:crayons:Bobo doll
20 of 24
What and How did the observers record data?
Two observers /Inter-rater reliability of .90/ Via one way mirror/ 5 sec intervals/Observed child's pre-determined behaviours by rating: Imitative aggression responses:partially imitative:responses non-imitaitve.
21 of 24
How many responses did the observers record for each child?
240 responses.
22 of 24
Results of Bandura's study for boys?
1)Children who saw (a) model imitated more (a) acts 2)Children in non-(a) less 3)Boys imitated male role models more than girls (p+v) 4)Boys made more imitative acts 5)Boys in (a) made less imitative acts if the model was female
23 of 24
Results of Bandura's study for girls?
1)Girls imitated more than boys in verbal aggression if the model was female 2) More physical aggression acts if the model was male than female.
