Why is a balanced diet important?
If you eat the right amounts of a wide variety of foods you have a balanced diet. A balance diet is important because no single food has all the substances that you need. Therefore, you must eat a variety of foods to get that necessary balanced diet.

What does a lack of protein cause?
Kwashiorkor. One symptom is a 'pot belly', caused by fluid collecting around the intestines and muscles that become too weak to hold the stomach in.

What does a lack of vitamin A cause?
night blindness (not being able to see well in dim light).

What is starvation?
The most severe form of malnutrition is starvation, in which people lack nearly all the nutrients they need. People who are starving have constant weight loss.

What is obesity?
People whose food contain more energy than they need become overweight. This can cause heart disease, when fat clogs the arteries and stops enough blood reaching the heart muscle tissue.

What help is there for your diet?
Many nutrition information labels give people an idea about how much of each nutrient can be eaten a day. These reference intakes are usually shown for adults.
