Assess risks to data and how likely it is those hazards will occur. Need to think about the effect it would have on the organisation if the event occured

Could cause them a lot of trouble/ go out of business

Describe a full backup
All the data is backed up in one go at the same time. Backup contains an entire copy of the data. Good for small businesses but if there is a large amount of data it can run over into the next day. Could be done once a week/month

What is a differential backup?
Only data that has been changed since the last backup is saved. Faster than full backup but takes longer than incremental. File can become larger than a backup file if done too many times

Describe an incremental backup
Saves all the files changed since the last backup. Slow restore method because of processing

What are RAID drivers?
save data onto multiple discs in a process called “mirroring.” The failed drive in the “disc array” would simply be hot-swapped for another, without the network having to shut down.

What is an advantage of using RAID drivers?
Good for mission critical servers as service can remain continuous.

When should backups take place?
Overnight when data files are not in use. PCs may be backed up weekly. Program and system files rarely change so can be backed up less frequently

Describe the use of magnetic tape as a backup medium
Cheap, large volume, fast write speed but slow to find archived data bc access is sequential

What are the positives and negatives of using hard disks as backup medium
More affordable, high capacity, easy to use. Slow access times

Describe the use of optical discs as a backup medium
Data can be accessed directly (quick recovery times). Only 700 MB so for home backup not industrial. Low cost

How can online storage be used in backups?
Storing backup data in the cloud.

What are the advantages of online storage?
Can be accessed from anywhere. Don't need to carry around bits of hardware

What are the disadvantages of using online storage?
Hacking is a security risk. Internet access required. Have to trust a third party to look after valuable/sensitive data.

Who is in charge of recovering data?
Network manager and administrators. Need a recovery disaster plan that will make getting data back easier as well as minimising the impact of a systems crash on the organisation

Where should backed up data be stored?
It can be stored off-site, safe remote location away from original PC or server. Secure location that a thief could not access. However, if the backups are kept too far away it can make recovery difficult as the media need to be transported to site

How can administrators ensure continuity of service?
The need to recurrently back up data somewhere. This makes things worse if this doesn’t happen. Back-ups need to have an uninterruptable power supply so service is not interrupted for too long

Trading to resume quickly, Give people confidence in a company, Retain customer who might change companies
