B9 Respiration Checklist Cards

?
I can state the word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water
1 of 14
I can write the balanced symbol equation for respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O
2 of 14
I can list ways in which living organisms use energy
Chemical reactions to build larger molecules, movement and keeping warm
3 of 14
I can explain why respiration is an exothermic reaction
Energy is released from respiration reactions (both aerobic and anaerobic) therefore it's exothermic as it's giving out energy for us to use
4 of 14
I can describe heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume change with exercise
Breathing rate and breath volume increases during exercise and after exercise. Heart rate increases during exercise.
5 of 14
I can explain why heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume change with exercise
Breathing rate/breath volume increases during exercise to get oxygen into the body to perform aerobic respiration. Heart rate increases to supply muscles with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide.
6 of 14
I can explain why stores of glycogen change with exercise
Glycogen is used during anaerobic respiration in the muscles to give the muscles more energy to contract and relax so the glycogen stores decrease resulting in muscle fatigue. Also glucose is transported to the liver.
7 of 14
I can state the word equation for anaeobic respiration in animals, plants and microorganisms
glucose --> ethanol + carbon dioxide
8 of 14
I can write the balanced symbol equation fo anaerobic respiration in plants and microorganisms
C6H12O6 --> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
9 of 14
I can describe the reason why cells respire anaerobically
Cells respire anaerobically to transfer energy in the mitochondria
10 of 14
I can give some uses of fermentation
Fermentation in yeast allows bread to rise and alcoholic drinks to be made. Also some cleaning products can be made
11 of 14
I can explain why muscles get tired during exercise
When anaerobic respiration happens, lactic acid is produced which is harmful and stops the muscles from contracting efficiently so the lactic acid must be removed
12 of 14
I can describe the role of the liver in repaying the oxygen debt
Breaks down lactic acids and turns it back into glucose so that oxygen debt can be repayed via aerobic respiration
13 of 14
I can list some metabolic reactions
Breakdown of proteins into urea, respiration, converting glucose to starch, forming lipids from fatty acids and glycerol
