What are capillaries?
Capillaries are really tiny blood vessels that have permeable wall so that substances can diffuse in and out
1 of 15
What are capillary beds?
Network of capillaries in tissue
2 of 15
How is tissue fluids formed?
Tissue fluids are formed when blood passes through capillary beds and small molecules are forced out of the capillaries. Tissue fluid surrounds the cells.
3 of 15
What is the function of tissue fluids?
They allow cells to get substances they need and get rid of waste
4 of 15
What is the job of a skeleton?
A skeleton supports the body and allows it to move as well as protects vital organs
5 of 15
What are ligaments and what are its properties?
Ligaments hold the bones at a joint together. Has high tensile strength-doesn’t snap easily. They are slightly elastic to stabilise joints but still allow movement.
6 of 15
Why are the ends of bones covered in a smooth layer of cartilage?
Cartilage reduces friction between the bones. And to acts like a shock absorber when compressed slightly.
7 of 15
What do membranes at some joints release?
They release an oily synovial fluid to lubricate the joints which allows them to move more easily by reducing friction.
8 of 15
What do tendons do?
Attach the bones to muscles
9 of 15
How to muscles move bones at a joint?
By contracting- becoming shorter
10 of 15
What happens when a muscles contracts?
The tendon pulls on the bone as tendons cant stretch. And this transmits the force from the muscle to bone.
11 of 15
What do muscles have to do to move a joint?
Push
12 of 15
Do muscles come in pairs?
Yes they are called antagonistic pairs. For example biceps and triceps are an antagonistic pair of muscles.
13 of 15
What happens when one muscle in the pair contracts?
The joint moves in one direction.
14 of 15
What happens when the other muscle in the pair contracts?
The joint moves in the opposite direction.
