What is a sprain?
Damage to the ligament is caused by being stretched too much. E.g a twisted ankle is where the foot turns over, pulling the ligament too far, causing damage and

What does dislocation mean?
When a bone comes out of its socket. For example, a heavy fall could cause dislocation to the shoulder, causing immense pain.

What are torn ligaments?
When the ligament actually tears and result in loss of control of the joint because the bones are no longer firmly attached together.

What is a torn tendon and how does it occur?
A tear in the tendon that attaches the muscle to the bone. It occurs when a muscle contracts in one direction, but is being pulled in the opposite direction.

What is the ‘RICE’ method?
Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation.

Why do we treat a sprain by resting it?
To avoid any further damage. It is important to rest for the first 24 hours and then the joint can be slowly and progressively used more and more.

Why do we apply ice after a sprain?
To help reduce swelling. It works by reducing the temperature and blood flow to the injured area

What is compression?
When a bandage is placed around the injury to reduce swelling and prevent further damage from excessive movement

Why is elevation important when treating a sprain?
By raising an injured limb as high as possible helps to reduce swelling by making it easier for blood to flow back to the heart

What exercises might a physiotherapist advice after a more serious injury to the skeletal system?
1) Standing up and tensing. 2)Stepping up and down, onto and off a low box. 3)3) Standing, and bending and straightening the legs at the knees
