What are simple reflexes?
Involuntary-No conscious thought required
1 of 19
When is a baby's nervous system not working?
When reflexes are missing at birth or have not gone long after they should have done
2 of 19
What causes SIDS?
When a fetus detects 02 is low in its bloodstream, it moves around a lot, therefore the 02 gets lower. OR it hardly moves trying not to waste the 02 in respiration. Or it suffocates by lying still.
3 of 19
How do you prevent SIDS?
Baby on their backs OR place at the end of the bed OR soft bedding
4 of 19
How does the reflex arc work?
Receptor detects stimuli, sends nerve impulses to sensory neuron, relay neuron in spinal cord sends message to the brain and passes impulses along to the motor neuron, which sends it to effector, causing the muscle to contract
5 of 19
How does prozac work?
Prozac molecules block the re-uptake channel. This means that serotonin is trapped. This makes the person really happy as serotonin is unable to go up the re-uptake channel and escape.
6 of 19
How do beta blockers work?
They reduce the transmission of impulses across synapses so taht your heart can gain a steady beat. They also control nerve impulses inside the heart.
7 of 19
What effects does Ecstasy have?
Long-term usage destroys the synapses in the pleasure pathways of the brain. Moreover, it can alter body temperature, and slow down ADH production in the brain. This can be fatal.
8 of 19
Which four functions of the brain happen in the cerebral cortex?
MILC. Memory, Intelligence, Language and Consciousness
9 of 19
What is Pavlov's theory of conditioning?
Dog salivates at the sight of food. Dog salivates at the sight of the bell and food together. Over a long period time the dog associates both together. When the bell rings the dog salivates.
10 of 19
How does a conscious reflex work?
Receptor detects stimuli, sends nerve impulses to sensory neuron, relay neuron in spinal cord sends message to the brain and passes impulses along to the motor neuron, which sends it to effector, but the brain sends a message and stops it contracting
11 of 19
What are ethical issues for studing the brain?
Animal testing is wrong. It isn't fair to mentally ill patients.
12 of 19
How are neuron pathways formed?
Nerve impulse travels along a particular pathway, causing a connection to form between the two neurons. If the experience is repeated, the nerve impulses follow the same pathway, and strengthen the connection. This allows you response to be easier.
13 of 19
Why are feral children not able to communicate properly?
Because they are older therefore neuron pathways are difficult to form.
14 of 19
How does visualisation help form neuron pathways?
Thinking about using a muscle triggers nerve impulses to that muscle
15 of 19
How do you know short and long-term memory work separately?
Because people with Alzheimer's are able to recall their child hood, but not what day it is
16 of 19
What does sensory memory do?
Stores visual information and sound
17 of 19
How does the multi-store model work?
Nerve impulses travel from eye to sensory memory, some info. is passed onto short-term memory, if it cannot hold it, the info. is lost, some info. passed to long-term memory, will remember those words and last info.stored in short-term memory
18 of 19
What is an active working memory and how does it help?
Active working memory=short-term memory. Communications between short and long-term memory is in both directions. Hence, you can retrieve info. or store it for later.
