HideShow resource information
What is DNA?
DNA is a Double Helix of paired bases.
1 of 17
What are the 4 different bases in DNA?
A G T C. T is ALWAYS paired with A and G is ALWAYS paired with C.
2 of 17
What controls the production of proteins in a Cell?
DNA.
3 of 17
How many bases are need to form 1 amino acid.
Three. This is called a triplet.
4 of 17
What is made by unzipping the two DNA strands?
A messenger RNA.
5 of 17
What is Mitosis?
Mitosis is when a cell splits to create two identical copies of the original cell.
6 of 17
What is Meiosis?
In meiosis cells split to form new cells with half the usual number of chromosomes, to produce gametes for sexual reproduction.
7 of 17
What are the two types of stem cells?
1) Adult stem cells 2) Embryonic stem cells.
8 of 17
What is the function of an adult stem cell?
They are used to cure diseases. e.g. some people with a blood disease can have a bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow contains stem cells that have new blood cells that replace the faulty old ones.
9 of 17
What is the function of an Embryonic Stem cell?
They can be extracted from a very early human embryo, these then could be made to differentiate to specific cells to replace faulty cells in sick people.
10 of 17
What are Meristems?
The only cells that are mitotically active and are found in the plants tissue.
11 of 17
What can be produces from cuttings?
Clones of the plant as the plant contains unspecialised meristem cells.
12 of 17
What does rooting powder do?
It Helps the cuttings from the plant grow into complete plants.
13 of 17
What is phototropism?
It is the growth towards or away from light.
14 of 17
What is positive phototropism?
when plants grow towards the sunlight. The phototropism mainly occurs in the leaves of the plant.
15 of 17
What is negative phototropism?
when plants need nutrients and water from the soil so the roots grow away from the sunlight, down the soil where they can absorb the water and nutrients for a healthy growth.
16 of 17
What are Auxins?
They are plant hormones. Thet are a chemical that control the growth near the tips of the shoots and roots.
