What are microorganisms used for?
Microorganisms are used to break down human and plant waste.

The presence of microorganisms is required for the process of decay.

Explain why an increase in Temperature will speed up the rate of decay:
Because Microbes are able to respire faster and will grow and reproduce quicker in warmer conditions.

Explain why an increase in Oxygen will speed up decay:
The more oxygen there is available, the faster the microbes will be able to respire. This will allow them to grow quicker and reproduce faster.

Microbes need water to remain healthy. In moist conditions the microbes will grow faster and reproduce more.

What does the term Saprophyte mean?
Saphrophytes are organisms that feed off dead and decaying material

What is the process of Saprotrophic feeding?
Saphrophytes digest material by releasing enzymes onto dead animals or plants. The enzymes digest the dead material in a process called extracellular digestion. The decomposers then absorb the digested chemicals.

What are Detritivores?
Detritivores, eat small parts of the dead material, which they digest and then release as waste.

Because food which is placed in a fridge is kept at a approximate temperature of 4°C, at this temp the reproduction of decomposers is slowed down.

Pests are any organisms that damage crops.

What are the the disadvantages of using pesticides?
• Entering and accumulating in food chains • Harming organisms that are not pests •Persisting in the environment for a long time

What are the advantages of hydroponics?
•The technique gives better control of the minerals needed by the plant. • There is better use of space. • Water is recycled, reducing waste. • Disease can be controlled inside the glasshouse.

What are the disadvantages of hydroponics?
• There is no support for the plant as roots are not anchored in the soil, so a frame or tray is needed. • Because there is no soil to hold & store minerals, fertilisers needed to be added constantly as dissolved minerals.
