What are microorganisms used for?
Microorganisms are used to break down human and plant waste.
1 of 21
Why are microorganisms needed?
The presence of microorganisms is required for the process of decay.
2 of 21
Explain why an increase in Temperature will speed up the rate of decay:
Because Microbes are able to respire faster and will grow and reproduce quicker in warmer conditions.
3 of 21
Explain why an increase in Oxygen will speed up decay:
The more oxygen there is available, the faster the microbes will be able to respire. This will allow them to grow quicker and reproduce faster.
4 of 21
Explain why in moist conditions decay is faster:
Microbes need water to remain healthy. In moist conditions the microbes will grow faster and reproduce more.

What does the term Saprophyte mean?
Saphrophytes are organisms that feed off dead and decaying material
6 of 21
What is the process of Saprotrophic feeding?
Saphrophytes digest material by releasing enzymes onto dead animals or plants. The enzymes digest the dead material in a process called extracellular digestion. The decomposers then absorb the digested chemicals.
7 of 21
What are Detritivores?
Detritivores, eat small parts of the dead material, which they digest and then release as waste.
8 of 21
What are some example of detritivores?
*Earthworms. *Maggots. *Woodlice *Millipedes.
9 of 21
Explain why keeping food in a fridge preserves decay for some time?
Because food which is placed in a fridge is kept at a approximate temperature of 4°C, at this temp the reproduction of decomposers is slowed down.
10 of 21
What are pests?
Pests are any organisms that damage crops.
11 of 21
What are the the disadvantages of using pesticides?
• Entering and accumulating in food chains • Harming organisms that are not pests •Persisting in the environment for a long time
12 of 21
What are the advantages of hydroponics?
•The technique gives better control of the minerals needed by the plant. • There is better use of space. • Water is recycled, reducing waste. • Disease can be controlled inside the glasshouse.
13 of 21
What are the disadvantages of hydroponics?
• There is no support for the plant as roots are not anchored in the soil, so a frame or tray is needed. • Because there is no soil to hold & store minerals, fertilisers needed to be added constantly as dissolved minerals.
14 of 21
What are the views of intensive farming?
Intensive farming methods may be efficient but they raise ethical dilemmas
15 of 21
Explain how intensive food production improves the efficiency of energy transfer by reducing energy transfer:
Organic farming does not use artificial fertilisers or pesticides
16 of 21
What does organic farming NOT do?
Organic farming does not use artificial fertilisers or pesticides
17 of 21
Describe organic farming techniques:
* Use of animal manure and compost *Crop rotation including use of nitrogen-fixing crops *Weeding *Varying seed planting times.
18 of 21
What is biological control?
Biological control is the use of predators to reduce populations of pests
19 of 21
What are the advantages of Biological Control?
•No need for chemical pesticides. •Does not need repeated treatment.
20 of 21
What are the disadvantages of Biological Control?
•Predator may not eat pest but may eat useful species. • Predator population may increase out of control or move from the area in which it is needed.
