Starch (a carbohydrate), proteins and fats
Insoluble
1 of 10
Starch (a carbohydrate), proteins and fats being broken down
They are broken down into soluble substances so that they can be absorbed into the bloodstream in the wall of the small intestine.
2 of 10
Large intestine
The water mixed with the food is absorbed into the bloodstream.
3 of 10
Enzyme amylase
Produced in the salivary glands, the pancreas and the small intestine. Amylase catalyses the breakdown of starch into sugars in the mouth and small intestine.
4 of 10
Protease enzymes
Produced by the stomach, the pancreas and the small intestine. These enzymes catalyse the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in the stomach and the small intestine.
5 of 10
Lipase enzymes
Produced by the pancreas and small intestine. These enzymes catalyse the breakdown of lipids into fatty acids and glycerol in the small intestine.
6 of 10
Stomach
Produces hydrochloric acid. The enzymes in the stomach work most effectively in acid conditions.
7 of 10
Liver
Produces bile, which is stored in the gall bladder before being released into the small intestine.
8 of 10
Bile
Bile neutralises the acid that was added to food in the stomach. This provides alkaline conditions in which enzymes in the small intestine work most effectively.
9 of 10
Bile
Bile also emulsifies fats (breaks large drops of fats into smaller droplets). This increases the surface area of fats for lipase enzymes to act upon.
