What organelles do plant cells have that animal cells don't?
A rigid cell wall mad of cellulose, a vacuole that contains cell sap, chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll and enzymes needed for photosynthesis.
1 of 13
What organelles do yeast contain? (name 5)
cell membrane, mitachondria, cytoplasm, cell wall, nucleus.
2 of 13
what do bacteria have instead of a nucleus? (b) They are therefore considered as a?
A circular molecule of DNA. (b) Prokaryotes
3 of 13
What are eukaryotes?
cells with a membrane-bound nucleus
4 of 13
What are made in the cytoplasm? (b) What takes place in the cytoplasm?
Enzymes. (b) Enzyme controlled reactions, eg. anaerobic respiration.
5 of 13
What is the definition of an enzyme?
A protein that speeds up chemical reactions.
6 of 13
Why do we need enzymes?
To control the amount of substances produced by chemical reactions.
7 of 13
Where are the instructions for making proteins such as enzymes found?
In a cell's genes, in the nucleus.
8 of 13
What is a substrate?
A molecule that is changed in a reaction.
9 of 13
Why do enzymes have an active site?
So that the substrate can bind to the enzyme which will change the substrate in the reaction.
10 of 13
Describe the 'lock and key' model.
Enzymes usually only speed up one reaction, as the substrate has to be the correct shape to fit into the active site.
11 of 13
How do temperature and PH change an enzyme?
At first, increasing the temperature changes the rate of the reaction. However, if the temperature gets too high, the bonds holding the enzyme together break, changing the shape of the active site. This also happens if the PH is wrong.
12 of 13
What is this process called?
Denaturing.
