B3 - The circulatory system

?
What is blood made up of?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
1 of 22
What is plasma?
The liquid part of the blood that enables blood to flow.
2 of 22
What does plasma do?
Carries important substances around the body such as: dissolved food substances, hormones, plasma proteins e.g. antibodies and waste products such as urea and carbon dioxide.
3 of 22
What are red blood cells?
Specifically adapted cells to carry oxygen around the body. They are very small so that they can pass through the smallest blood vessels.
4 of 22
What else do they contain other than oxygen?
Haemoglobin to react with oxygen in the lungs to form oxyhaemoglobin. This reaction is reversible
5 of 22
Why don't red blood cells contain nuclei?
Room for more haemoglobin
6 of 22
Why are red blood cells biconcave?
It provides a larger surface area to volume ratio to exchange oxygen more quickly.
7 of 22
What are arteries?
Blood vessels that transport blood away from the heart to the tissues
8 of 22
What are veins?
Blood vessels that transport blood back to the heart from the tissues.
9 of 22
What are capillaries?
Blood vessels that link arteries to veins and allow materials to pass between the blood and the tissues. Substances can be exchanges between the blood and body cells here.
10 of 22
What is the structure of arteries for its specific function?
They have thick muscular and elastic walls to resist high pressures
11 of 22
What is the structure of veins for its specific function?
They have large lumen and vales to try and keep the blood moving back to the heart because the pressure is low.
12 of 22
What is the structure of capillaries for its specific function?
They have permeable walls so substances can be transferred between the blood and the tissues
13 of 22
What is the blood in the pulmonary vein in terms of oxygen?
Oxygenated
14 of 22
What is the blood in the pulmonary artery in terms of oxygen?
Deoxygenated
15 of 22
What is the heart?
A hollow muscular organ that pumps blood through the circulatory system
16 of 22
What are the chambers in the heart called?
Right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle
17 of 22
What are the atriums for?
Receiving blood from the veins
18 of 22
What are the ventricles for?
Pumping blood into the arteries away from the heart
19 of 22
What is the point of the valves?
To prevent backflow of blood
20 of 22
Why does the left ventricle have a thicker muscle wall than the right ventricle?
Because it has to pump blood all around the body so it needs more pressure.
21 of 22
Why do we have a double circulatory system?
Because our blood needs to go around the body and the lungs.
