What do large complex organs have? Why?
Special exchange surfaces so that they can obtain all the food and oxygen they need.
1 of 12
What are solutes?
The solid that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution.
2 of 12
What is absorbed by the lungs?
Oxygen.
3 of 12
What is removed from the lungs?
Carbon dioxide.
4 of 12
What are efficient exchange surfaces?
Large surface area, thin walls or short diffusion path and efficient transport system.
5 of 12
What is an example of an efficient transport system?
The blood supply in animals.
6 of 12
What do the lungs also contain?
A gaseous exchange system.
7 of 12
How is the surface area of the lungs increased?
By the alveoli (air sacs)
8 of 12
What do alveoli have?
Thin walls, a large surface area and a good blood supply.
9 of 12
Why are the lungs ventilated?
To maintain a steep diffusion gradient.
10 of 12
Where does oxygen diffuse into?
Many cappilaries surronding the alveoli.
11 of 12
Where does carbon dioxide diffuse into?
Back out into the lungs to be breathed out.
