What is the human population doing?
Increasing very rapidly (exponentially)
1 of 13
As well as a rise in population, what is causing pressure on the environment?
A higher standard of living in developed countries. Small proportion of population and large proportion of pollution!
2 of 13
What is global warming doing?
When fossil fuels are burnt they release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. They trap heat in the atmosphere, causing the global temperature to rise.
3 of 13
What is acid rain doing?
When fossil fuels and waste materials are burnt they release sulfur dioxide which reacts with water vapour and falls as acid. It damages soil and kills trees, changes pH of lakes, ruins buildings.
4 of 13
What is ozone depletion doing?
CFCs used to be in lots of things but they break down the ozone layer allowing UV rays to reach the surface = more chance of skin cancer and plankton might be killed-sea food chain hell!
5 of 13
What does an indicator species do?
Tells us if an area is polluted or not.
6 of 13
How can you tell about pollution from lichens?
They can only survive in clean air - cleaner air = more lichens
7 of 13
How can you tell about pollution from mayfly larvae?
Cant survive in polluted water. Cleaner water = more mayfly larvae
8 of 13
What indicates there IS pollution?
Water lice, rat tailed maggots and sludgeworms all adapted to live in polluted water
9 of 13
Advantages of using indicator species to measure pollution?
Quick, cheap, easy;
10 of 13
Disadvantages of using indicator species to measure pollution?
Other factors can influence species survial
11 of 13
Advantages of using non-living methods to measure pollution?
Reliable data, exact, comparable
12 of 13
Disadvantages of using non-living methods to measure pollution?
Expensive equipment and trained workers
