What are adaptations?
Features that organisms have to make them better suited to their environment
1 of 14
Why are adaptations good?
Better at competing for resources meaning theyre more likely to survive, reproduce, and pass on their adaptations
2 of 14
What are specialists?
Organisms that are highly adapted to survive in a specific environment (e.g. giant pandas)
3 of 14
What are generalists?
Organisms that are adapted to survive in a range of different habitats (e.g. black rats)
4 of 14
In a habitat where they are stable, who will out-compete? (specialists or generalists)
Specialists as theyre better for the specific conditions
5 of 14
In a habitat where the conditions change, who will out-compete? (specialists or generalists)
Generalists as they are adapted to a range
6 of 14
What are organisms called who are adapted to extreme conditions? (e.g. low/high temp, low/high pH)
Extremophiles
7 of 14
What adaptations can help in cold environments?
Thick coat/layer of blubber, large size and compact body shape, counter-current heat exchange systems
8 of 14
Why do large organisms lose less heat?
They have a smaller surface area to volume ratio
9 of 14
What is a counter-current heat exchange system?
Blood flowing in opposite directions pass close together, allowing heat to transfer between them meaning cold blood doesnt go anywhere else
10 of 14
What other adaptation can you have to the cold?
Behavioural adaptations. (Migrating, hibernating and huddling)
11 of 14
What behavioural adaptations can reduce heat gain?
Staying in the shade or underground, be active at night, bathing in water
12 of 14
What anatomical adaptations can you have to the heat/
Small (large surface area to volume ratio), large thin ears, fat in just one part of the body (e.g. camels hump)
13 of 14
How do plants and animals adapt to living in dry areas?
Desert plants have a small sa:vol, have a thick waxy layer, spines not leaves, store water and extensive roots to reduce water loss. Animals have specialsied kidneys, no sweat glands, stay underground.
