What is classification?
Organising living organisms into groups
1 of 13
Why are classification systems important in science?
They help us understand how organisms are related (evolutionary relationships) and how they interact with each other (ecological relationships)
2 of 13
What is natural classification?
Based on evolutionary relationships and genetic similarites
3 of 13
What is artificial classification?
Based on appearance. Used to identify organsims.
4 of 13
What is the biggest thing organisms are divided into?
Kingdom
5 of 13
What is a genus?
A group of closely related species
6 of 13
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
7 of 13
What does DNA sequencing do?
Allows us to see genetic differences between organisms, seeing new relationships
8 of 13
What is a evolutionary tree?
Shows how closely related different species are to each other (like a family tree)
9 of 13
What 3 things make classification hard?
Asexual reproduction, Hybrids, Evolution is continuous
10 of 13
What is the binomial system?
A system for naming organisms. Its a two part system - first part genus, second part species (e.g. Homo Sapien)
11 of 13
What do similar species have?
A common ancestor.
12 of 13
Do closely related species look similar and live in similar habitats?
Sometimes, like whales and dolphins, but not always like llamas and camels
