B2a Classification

?
How are organisms classified?
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species
1 of 8
Why is it important to classify species in terms of evoluionary and ecological relationships?
Ecology and evolution are intimately related; an organisms ecological situation directs it's evolution
2 of 8
Define the term species
A group of organisms which can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
3 of 8
What is a binomial name made up of?
Genus and Species
4 of 8
What is natural classification?
Classification based on evolutionary features/links, so organisms are grouped together if they have common ancestry
5 of 8
What is artificial classification?
Classification based on one or two characteristics to make identification easy
6 of 8
How has DNA sequencing led to changes in understanding of classification?
It has enabled scientists to become more certain of how closely related organisms are.
7 of 8
What does DNA sequencing involve?
It involves identifying the genes for similar characteristics. If these gene sequences are similar in both organisms then the species is related. The more sequences they have in common the more closely related they are.
