B2 - Specialised Cells

  • Palisade leaf cells
  • Guard cells
  • Red blood cells
  • Resproductive cells
?
What are the purposes and adaptions of palisade leaf cells?
Used for photosynthesis, full of chloroplasts, large curface area for more CO2 absorbtion, thin shape so they can be nearer the top of the leaf (nearer the light).

What are the purposes and adaptions of guard cells?
Used to open and close pores, they have a special kidney shape which opens and closes the stomata in a leaf. When the plant has lots of water, these cells fill up so it can be exchanged in photosynthesis. They save water.
2 of 5
What are the purposes and adaptions of red blood cells?
Used to carry oxygen, concave shape leaves a bigger surface area for absorbing oxygen. They're packed with haemoglobin and they have no nucleus so they hav more room for haemoglobin.
3 of 5
What are the purposes and adaptions of sperm cells?
Used to get male DNA to an egg cell, long tail and streamline head to make it swim. There is a lot of mitochondria to provide energy.
4 of 5
What are the purposes and adaptions of egg cells?
Used to carry female DNA and to nourish the devloping embryo. Contains large food reserves and the membrane changes when it is fertilised so the embryo has the right amount of DNA.
