What is classification?
Classification is organising animals into different groups.
1 of 15
Evolutionary and Ecological relationships
Evolutionary- based on the genes of the animal. Ecological- based on how the animal interacts with other animals.
2 of 15
Artificial Classification
Basd on how the creature looks rather than genes. It is used to identify the creatures.
3 of 15
Natural classification
Based on the evolutionary relationship of the animls.
4 of 15
Classification system
Kingdom,Phylum,Class,Order,Family,Genus,Species
5 of 15
Genus
A group of closely related animals.
6 of 15
Species
A group of animals that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
7 of 15
Change of classification systems
When its new ever species fits into each of the category perfectly but over new species are discovered and some of them can be put in more than 1 of the system therefore you have to adapt the system.
8 of 15
DNA Sequencing
This shows the genetic similarities and differences between the animals. This makes it easier to identify and classify them.
9 of 15
Evolutionary tree
A way in which you can see how the animals are related
10 of 15
Relationships
The more common the recent ancestor, the closer the species therefore the more characteristics they share.
11 of 15
Problems in clasifying the species
Assexual reproduction,Hybrids and Evolution
12 of 15
Assexual reproduction
Some animals such as bacteria makes A copy of themseleves. This makes it hard to classify as they are not interbreeding.
13 of 15
Hybrids
This is hwen 2 different species breed. Their offspring id usually infertile. It is hard to classify these as they are not new species but just a mixyure of both the species.
14 of 15
Evolution
Some species adapt to changes so much over time that they dont have many characteristics of the original species left. This is hard as they are not completly new species but have just adapted overtime.
