B2 - Extinction and Specification

  • Evolution
  • physical barriers
  • Specification
?
Why do species become extinct?
The environment changes too quickly, a new predator kills them all, a new disease kills them all, they can't compete with a new species, a catastrophic event occurs, a new species develops.
1 of 5
What is specification?
Specification is the devlopment of new species.Specification occurs when populations of the same species become so different that they can no longer breed together to produce fertile offspring.
2 of 5
What is natural selection?
Each population shows variation because they have a wide range of alleles. In each population, individuals with characteristics that make them better adapted to their environment have a better chance of survival so are more likely to breed.
3 of 5
How do physical barriers cause specification?
Two populations fo the same species -> physical barriers separate populations -> populations adapt to new environments -> development of new species.
4 of 5
Give an example of a species that is extinct and how it became that way.
Dodo - humans hunted it, destroyed they're habitat and released new animals. Dinosaurs - changes in habitat meant they couldn't survive.
