What is the photosynthesis equation?
Photosynthesis can be summed up by the equation. carbon dioxide + water --> glucose + oxygen
1 of 14
Define photosynthesis.
The process by which plants make food using carbon dioxide, water and light energy.
2 of 14
Name four adaptations of leaves that help plants photosynthesis.
1. broad leaves 2. contain chlorophyll in the chloroplasts 3. air spaces 4. veins
3 of 14
What happens during photosynthesis?
Light energy is absorbed by a green substance called chlorophyll, which is found in chloroplasts in some plant cells and algae. This energy is used by converting carbon dioxide and water into sugar. Oxygen is released as a by-product
4 of 14
What factors limit the rate of photsynthesis in plants?
The rate of photosynthesis may be limited by shortage of light, low temperature and shortage of carbon dioxide.
5 of 14
How can we use what we know about limiting factors to grow more food?
We can manipulate the levels of light, temperature and carbon dioxide artifically to incraese the rate of photosynthesise in food crops.
6 of 14
What do plants do with the glucose they make?
Some glucose in plants and algae is used: to respire, to produce fat or oil for storage, to produce cellulose which strengthens the cell wall and to produce proteins.
7 of 14
What other materials do plants and algal cells need to produce proteins?
Plants and algal cells need other materials including nitrate ions to make the amino acids which make up proteins.
8 of 14
How can we control the environmnet in which plants are grown?
The artifical environment can be artifically controlled to makes sure light, temperature and carbon dioixide levels don't limit growth.
9 of 14
What are the disadvantages of growing plants in an artifical environment?
Poor countries are reliant on outside assistance and cannot afford the cost of the artifical environment required to achieve high crop yields
10 of 14
What factors affect the distribution of organisms in their natural environment?
Temperature, nutrients, the amount of light, the availability of water and the availability of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
11 of 14
How can you measure the distribution of living things in their natural environment?
You can get quantative data on the organisms in the environment using: random sampling with quadrants and sampling along a transect
12 of 14
Will the method used answer the question that has been asked?
Different methods can be used to collect environmental data.
13 of 14
Have all the variables been controlled?
Validity and reproduciblity
