B2 Surface Area ISA

?
Identify Your independent and dependent variables
Independant - the surface area of the potato, dependent - the mass of the potato following exposure to the water
1 of 6
Write a hypothesis using the independent and dependent variables
If there is an increase in surface area of the potato tissue, this will mean that the amount of water absorbed will also increase
2 of 6
Explanation of the hypothesis clearly
Cut up a potato the surface area will be increased, larger proportion of exterior exposed, allows higher volume of water to be absorbed resulting in mass gain
3 of 6
Which of the two sources do you find more useful when planning your method?
Source one gives clear explanation of theory, no reference to calculations needed, different example. Source 2 - explains calculations, similar practical using potato, used different independent variable, didnt explain theory like source 1.
4 of 6
What is the control variable?
The time in which the potato is left in the water for; which in my case will be ten minutes.
5 of 6
How would a preliminary investigation help to determine a value?
Use a range of different times, too short = no change in mass, too long = hard to handle (bursts)
