B2 classification

?
How do scientists classify organisms?
Scientists group or classify them using shared characteristics
1 of 10
Why is classifying organisms important?
It helps us workout how organisms evolved on earth and also helps us to understand how different organisms are able to coexist in ecological communities and and it also helps us identify and monitor rare organisms at risk of extinction.
2 of 10
What are the names of the five kingdoms?
Animal, plants, fungi, proctoctista/Protozoa and prokaryotes
3 of 10
What are Arthropods?
Arthropods are an important group of invertabrates
4 of 10
What is the problem with clasifying organisms into groups?
Observable features can sometimes be misleading
5 of 10
What is the hierarchy of the structure used to sort organisms into groups?
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
6 of 10
Give an example of a useful way to understand evolutionary relationship
You could show it as an evolutionary tree
7 of 10
What does the term species mean?
A group of organisms that share all the same characteristics and can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
8 of 10
What is the binomial naming system and why is it important?
It is important because scientists can refer to species with the name. The binomial naming system also known as the 'two name' system is when each species is given two Latin names, the first part is the genus and the second part is the species
