How many chromosomes do humans have?
46 (23 pairs)
1 of 15
How do cells divide?
By a process called Mitosis.
2 of 15
What is stage one of the cell cycle?
Longest stage. When the cell replicates everything inside it and grows bigger.
3 of 15
What is stage two of the cell cycle?
Chromosomes are pulled to each end of the dividing cell and the nucleus divides.
4 of 15
What is stage three of the cell cycle?
This is the stage where cytoplasm and the cell membrane divide to form two identical cells.
5 of 15
What is mitosis?
It is a process that produces two identical cells.
6 of 15
What is differentiation?
Differentiation is when stem cells become specialised cells.
7 of 15
Why is differentiation important in living organisms?
They replace dead or damaged cells.
8 of 15
How do you clone plants?
You clone them by getting a piece of the leaf tissue and in the right conditions they can become unspecialised and go through mitosis many times
9 of 15
Where are stem cells found in the body?
Bone marrow or embryos
10 of 15
What is a zygote?
A fusion of an egg cell and sperm cell
11 of 15
What is an embryo?
A zygote that divides and becomes a hollow ball of cells
12 of 15
How are stem cells useful in medicine?
They can be used to kill cancer and can fight paralysis by repairing spinal nerves
13 of 15
What are the problem with embryonic stem cells?
They are seen as unethical as they are taken from abortions
14 of 15
What are the advantages of embryonic stem cells and how are they better than adult stem cells?
They can specialise into more cells and there are more of them, they also act quicker
