What is a natural classification system?
A system based on the evolutionary relationships and genetic similarities between organisms
1 of 16
What is the classification system order?
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genes, Species
2 of 16
What asexual reproduction?
Where an organsim reproduces by making a copy of itself, there is no interbreeding.
3 of 16
What is the problem with hybrids?
They are usually infertile but they aren't a new species so its difficult to classify them
4 of 16
How does the binomial system work?
Homosapiens - Home is the genes and Sapiens is the species
5 of 16
What is intraspecific competition?
Competition where organisms compete for resources against individuals of the same species
6 of 16
What is a mutualist relationship? Give an example:
A relationship with both organsims benefit, for example, oxpeckers who live on buffalo backs.
7 of 16
What is the definition for a generalist species?
Organsims that are highly adapted to survive in a specific habitat.
8 of 16
Name a biochemical adaption for a hot extreme condition:
Extremophile bacteria- they ave enzymes that work best in a high optimum temperature.
9 of 16
Name a biochemical adaption for a cold extreme condition:
Antifreeze proteins - they interfere with the formation and growth of ice crystals in the cells, stopping the cells from being damaged by ice
10 of 16
Name three anatomical adaptions that reduce heat loss:
1) a thick coat or layer of blubber to insulate 2) large surface area to volume ratio 3) counter-current heat exchange
11 of 16
How does counter-current heat exchange work?
Blood vessels pass close to each other allowing heat to transfer between them, warm blood in arteries heats the cold blood in veins going to heart so the feet stay cold but the rest of the body doesnt.
12 of 16
Name three behavioural adaptions to the cold:
1) migration 2) hibernation 3) huddle
13 of 16
Name three behavioural adaptions to the hot:
1) find shelter in shade or underground (minimise heat gained from surroundings) 3)becoming active at night 3)bathing in water
14 of 16
Name three anatomical adaptions to increase heat loss:
1) large surface area to volume ratio 2)large ears 3)store fat in just one part of their body
15 of 16
Name two ways organsims can be adapted to living in dry environments:
1) a thick waxy layer (plants) called the cuticle 2) no sweat glands or specialised kidneys (animals)
