How do cells divide?
Through the cell cycle and mitosis
1 of 12
What is the cell cycle?
The cycle a cell goes through when splitting or dividing
2 of 12
Describe the first stage of the cell cycle:
All chromosomes and sub-cellular structures are divided and made more of. THe cell also grows larger and gains a lot more mass.
3 of 12
Describe mitosis
When one set of chromosomes is split to each end of the cell and the nuceus splits
4 of 12
Describe stage 3 of the cell cycle:
THe cytoplasm and the cel membrane also divide, forming two identical duaghter cells
5 of 12
Describe why the cells in our body are not always the exact same
THey differentiate, meaning they all have little changes to them to adapt to their jobs as they grow
6 of 12
What is a stem cell?
Unspecialised cells capable of becoming any type of cell required
7 of 12
How do plant cells differ from animal cells in terms of differentiation?
Most of a plants cells can differentiate all throughout their lives
8 of 12
When do plant cells differentiate?
When they are in their final position in the plant
9 of 12
How can some stem cells be used in medicine?
They are able to grow into different types of required cells in patients, and so can imporve treatment dramatically
10 of 12
How can stem cells be used in terms of helping plants?
They can make clones of plants from their meristems and this can be used to hep make more rare plants reliably and safely
11 of 12
Give examples of other uses of stem cells in medicine:
Spinal cord after injuries, Diabetes, heart after damage in a heart attack, eyesight in the blind, damaged bone and cartilage
