What does the IRIS do?
Controls the amount of light that enters the eye.
1 of 16
What does the CORNEA do?
Refracts the rays of light.
2 of 16
What does the LENS do?
Focuses light onto the retina, converges to produce a clear image.
3 of 16
What is a lens?
The lens is a clear, flexible bag of fluid surrounded by circular ciliary muscles that change the shape of the lens.
4 of 16
When receiving light from a NEAR object, what happens?
- Ciliary muscles contract - Suspensory ligaments relax - The lens is short and fat.
5 of 16
When receiving light from a DISTANT object, what happens?
- Ciliary muscles relax - Suspensory ligaments contract - The lens is long and thin.
6 of 16
What do SENSORY NEURONES do?
Carry nerve impulses from the receptors to the brain.
7 of 16
What do RELAY NEURONES do?
Make connections between neurones inside the brain to the spinal cord.
8 of 16
What do MOTOR NEURONES do?
Carry nerve impulses from the brain to the muscles and glands.
9 of 16
What is the CNS and PNS?
Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System.
10 of 16
What is a SYNAPSE?
A small gap between neurones.
11 of 16
Name some common eye defects.
Long sighted, Short sighted, Red - Green colour blindness (inherited)
12 of 16
Long and short sight are caused by..
The lens being the wrong shape, so the light rays cant accurately be focused on the retina.
13 of 16
Binocular Vision is..
Eyes are close together at the front of the head, each eye has a limited field view, found on humans and predators
14 of 16
Monocular Vision is..
Eyes are positioned on either side of the head, each eye has a wide field view, found on prey
15 of 16
How does 'CORRECTIVE EYE SURGERY' work?
Cutting a flap in the cornea, folding it back and using a laser to reshape the cornea.
