What is malaria caused by?
A protozoan called Plasmodium, which feeds on human red blood cells.

What is the difference between benign and malignant tumors?
Benign tumor cells, such as in warts, divide slowly and are harmless. Cancers are malignant tumours: the cells display uncontrolled growth and may spread.

What is a pathogen?
A disease-causing organism.

What is the drug called that is used to treat bacteria and fungi?
Antibiotics

What is the drug called that is used to treat viruses?
Antivirals

What is the difference between the effect of antibiotics and antivirals?
An antibiotic destroys a pathogen; an antiviral drug slows down the pathogen's development.

What are the methods of testing new treatments before human trials are used?
Animal testing, human tissue testing and computer models.

What is a placebo?
A harmless pill that is used as a comparison in drug testing so the effect of the new drug can be assessed.

What is a blind trial?
Where the patient doesn't know if they are recieving the new drug or a placebo.

What is a double blind trial?
Where neither the patient or the doctor know which treatment is being used. This type of trial avoids a 'feel good factor' and a biased opinion.
