B1.5 - Energy and biomass in food chains

?
What is Biomass?
Biomass means the mass of living material at a stage in a food chain. The biomass goes down as you go from one stage to the next, just like the amount of energy.
1 of 7
What is a food chain?
A sequence, usually showing who eats what and where the stored energy is transferred to.
2 of 7
Where else would any organism find an alternative source of energy?
Radiation from the Sun is the source of energy for most communities of living organisms.
3 of 7
How can living material be produced in a scaled drawing?
The biomass at each stage can be drawn to scale and shown as a pyramid of biomass.
4 of 7
What can respiration do for us?
Respiration supplies all the energy needs for living processes, including movement. Much of the energy is eventually transferred to its surroundings.
5 of 7
How much can plants intake the amount of sunlight needed for respiration?
Green plants and algae absorb small amounts of the light that reaches them.
6 of 7
What can light energy be transferred to?
The transfer from light energy to chemical energy occurs during photosynthesis. The energy is stored in the substances that make up the cells of the plants.
