What happens to the material and energy in the biomass of organisms at each stage of a food chain?
The amount of biomass and energy gets less at each successive stage in a food chain.
1 of 5
How is some energy transferred to the environment?
This is because some material and energy are always lost in waste material, and some are used for respiration to supply energy for living processes, including movement. Much of the energy is eventually transferred by heating to the surroundings.
2 of 5
How is energy lost in the food chain?
Energy can be lost due to waste, movement, respiration and to mainatin a constant body temperature.
3 of 5
What process in cells releases energy from food material?
Respiration in cells releases energy from food.
4 of 5
Why is biomass lost in faeces (and urea)?
Not all of the food eaten can be digested, so energy is stored in faeces or as urea in urine (waste materials).
