Microorganisms which cause disease.

Bacteria and viruses.

What are bacteria?
Single-celled living organisms that are much smaller than animal and plant cells.

To make food like yoghurt and cheese, to treat sewage and to make medicines.

They reproduce rapidly, which is how they make you ill.

How do bacteria reproduce?
They split into two.

They often produce toxins (poisons) which affect your body, sometimes directly damaging your cells.

How do viruses reproduce?
They take over the cells of your body as they reproduce, damaging and destroying the cells.

What are some common disease symptoms?
High temperature, headaches and rashes.

How are these symptoms caused?
By the damage and toxins produced by the pathogens.

When do you catch an infectious disease?
When you pick up a pathogen from someone else who is infected with the disease.
