what enters the body to cause diseases called pathogens?

what are pathogens?

pathogens cause infectious diseases that can easily spread

what is bacteria?

bacteria are very small living cells which can reproduce rapidly inside your body.

what two things do bacteria do to make you feel ill?

damaging your cells/ produce toxins(poisons)

what are viruses?

viruses are not cells. they're tiny.

what do viruses do?

they replicate themselves by invading your cells and using the cells' machinery to produce many copies of themselves. the cell will usually burst. releasing all the new viruses. cell damage is what makes you feel ill.

what is the bodies defence system?

skin, hairs, mucus in respiratory tract stop nasties getting inside your body. try to prevent microorganisms getting into the body through cuts, small fragments of cells called platelets help blood clot to seal wounds.

what if something does make it through?

your immune system kicks in. WHITE BLOOD CELLS travel around your body and crawl in every part of you, constantly patrolling for microbes. they have three lines of attack.

what are the three lines of attack? first line-

1) consuming them- white blood cells can engulf foreign cells & digest them

second line of attack part 1

1) invading cell has unique molecule(antigens) on its surface 2)white blood cell come across a foreign antigen- will start to produce proteins called anitibodies to lock onto & kill invading cells. antibodies produced-specific to that type of antigen

sencond line of attack part 2

3)antibodies then reproduce rapidly & carried around the body to kill all similar bacteria or viruses. if person is injected with same pathogen again the white blood cell rapidly produces antibodies to kill it,person naturally immune to that pathogen

third line of attack

producing antitoxins- these counteract toxins produced by the invading bacteria.
