Susan and Richard are overweight and want to lose mass. They both go on a diet and eat exactly the same food for a week. Richard loses more mass. Suggest Two possible Reasons why and explain why your reasons will lead to Richard losing more mass.
Richard has a higher/Faster metabolic rate. Richard has a more active lifestyle. If he exercises then he will use up stored fat to release energy. and if his metabolic rate is faster then chemical reactions in his cells will use more energy than hers.
1 of 7
Explain why a diet high in fat will lead to a bigger weight gain than a diet high in protein.
Fat releases double the amount of energy per gram compared to protein. This energy gets stored as fat if it is not used up. Proteins are used for growth and repair rather than energy.
2 of 7
Outline how high cholesterol levels in the blood can lead to a heart attack.
High cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of developing plaques in the walls of the arteries that supply the heart with blood. Plaques make it more likely that a blood clot will form. Stopping blood flow.
3 of 7
Olive oil is an unsaturated fat which can increase the amounts of HDL cholesterol in the blood. Explain why people who eat a diet high in olive oil have a low risk of developing heart disease.
HDL cholesterol helps to remove cholesterol from the walls of the blood vessels. So blood vessels are less likely to get blocked with blood clots and heart disease is less likely to develop.
4 of 7
Explain how viruses and bacteria make us feel ill.
Bacteria produce toxins. Viruses reproduce inside our body cells. When the cell gets filled up with viruses is bursts open killing the cell.
5 of 7
State two ways lymphocytescan destroy pathogens.
By producing antibodies and by producing antitoxins.
6 of 7
Antibodies are specific. What does this mean?
They can only attach themselves to one type of pathogen.
