What is the eyepiece lens?
looked through to see the image & also magnifies the image
1 of 17
What is the objective lens?
magnifies the image, usually there are 3 different objective lenses e.g. x4, x10, x40
2 of 17
What is the Stage?
Platform that supports the slide
3 of 17
What is the clip?
Holds the slide in place
4 of 17
What is the handle?
So you can carry the microscope with
5 of 17
What is the lamp?
It shines light through the slide so the image can be seen more easily
6 of 17
What are the focusing knobs?
Moves the stage up & down to bring to image into focus
7 of 17
How do you prepare specimens to view under the light microscopes?
1)Take a thin slice of it 2)Use pipette to drop water/mountant on a slide 3) use tweezers to put specimen on slide, add drop of stain if needed 4)Place on top the cover slip using mounted needle
8 of 17
What is a mountant?
a clear,gloopy liquid
9 of 17
why do you put water or mountant on the slide?
to secure the specimen in place
10 of 17
when do you use a stain?
When specimen is completely transparent or colourless-so you ca see it easier
11 of 17
Give some examples of stains
Eosin-stains cytoplasm Methylene Blue stains DNA
12 of 17
What is a cover slip?
a sqaure of thin, transparent plastic/glass
13 of 17
why do carefully lower the cover slip over the specimen?
to ensure no air bubbles get trapped
14 of 17
How do you correctly use a light microscope to view the prepared specimen?
watch the revision video
15 of 17
Why is a higher magnification not always a good thing?
If your specimen is relatively big you might not be able to see the whole thing, It can also be difficult to focus at high magnifications
16 of 17
What do you after you are happy with what you can see in microscope?
you produce a scientific drawing of your specimen
