B1 Controlling Plant Growth

HideShow resource information
Plant hormones are chemicals that control what?
1. the growth of shoots and roots 2. flowering and the ripening of fruits
1 of 13
What are auxins?
one group of plant hormones that move through the plant in solution
2 of 13
How do auxins affect the plant's growth?
by responding to gravity (geotropism) and light (phototropism)
3 of 13
How do shots grow?
towards the light (positive phototropism) against gravity (negative geotropism)
4 of 13
How do roots grow?
away from light (negative phototropism), downwards in the direction of gravity (positive geotropism) to absorb water and provide support for the plant
5 of 13
Where is auxin made?
in the shoot tip
6 of 13
What is an auxin's distribution determined by?
light and can therefore be unequal
7 of 13
What happens when the light shines on a shoot?
1. the hormones in direct sunlight are destroyed 2. the hormones on the shaded side continue to function causing the cells to elongate 3. the shoot bends towards the light
8 of 13
What are plant hormones used to do in agriculture?
to speed up or slow down plant growth
9 of 13
What is rooting powder?
a hormone which encourages the growth of roots in stem cuttings, so many plants can be obtained from one plant
10 of 13
What is fruit-ripening hormone?
causing fruit to either ripen quicker or slower
11 of 13
What is control of dormancy?
hormones can be used to speed up or slow down plant growth and bud development
12 of 13
What is selective weed killer?
hormones in the weedkiller disrupt the growth patterns of their target plants.
