B063: 2014 TechMed Pre-release Chapter 5 Revision

?
What are sensors?
Sensors are used to detect physical quantities such as light level, pressure, temperature and movement.
1 of 18
What are biosensors?
Biosensors are used to detect the presence of various chemicals in a substance.
2 of 18
Why are sensors widely used in hospitals?
To convert various physical quantities and stimuli into electronic signals that can be use to monitor or analyse patient conditions.
3 of 18
What are the most common types of sensor used in hospitals?
Pressure sensors, biosensors, temperature sensors, image sensors, accelerometers, flow sensors and implanted sensors.
4 of 18
What are pressure sensors used for?
Blood pressure monitring, kidney dialysis machines and respiratory monitoring. Also, they could be used to check whether a patient is in their bed.
5 of 18
What are biosensors used for?
Testing blood sugar, cholesterol and pregnancy testing.
6 of 18
What are temperature sensors used for?
Digital thermometers, patient temperature monitoring and the control of the hospital heating system.
7 of 18
What are image sensors used for?
Radiography and external observations.
8 of 18
What are accelerometers used for?
Heart pacemakers and other intergrated health-monitoring equipment.
9 of 18
What are flow sensors used for?
Part of anaesthesia delivery machines, gas mixing and respiration-monitoring systems.
10 of 18
What are implanted sensors used for?
Used in cases where long-term monitoring is necessary such as heart pacemaker control and measuring tumour growth. Wireless technology has enabled implanted sensors to become smaller and more reliable.
11 of 18
What is data logging?
Where an ICT system collects and stores data at predetermined intervals.
12 of 18
The sensors can be connected to a computer for storage and display. However, they could also be stand-alone devices, normally small and battery powered. What 3 elements do they contain?
A microprocessor or computer, internal sensors or sensor input and data storage.
13 of 18
What are some advantages to using computerised data logging and not logging data manually?
Automatic readings can be taken at the correct time intervals, the possibility of human error is removed and the actual readings can be taken quickly and accurately in spilt-second events.
14 of 18
Why are patient monitoring systems used in hospitals?
To observe vital signs such as pulse rate or the percentage of oxygen in the blood.
15 of 18
These tests normally carried out automatically. If a problem or emergency is detected what happens?
An alarm or warning is sent to the hospital staff to take action with details of what is wrong.
16 of 18
Why will the use of patient monitoring systems improve staff efficiency?
It can monitor up to 60 patients at a time, remotely control wireless and hardwired monitors from a central location. It also adjust alarms or delivery alarms to anywhere in the hospital.
17 of 18
What is an advantage to wireless technology being used in patient-monitoring systems?
There are fewer connections, it is easier to set up the system and is more comfortable to the patient.
