His Maternal Uncle (Ismail ibn Yahya Muzani) was his first teacher, he was a follower of Imaam Shaafia but Imaam Tahawi felt drawn to the Ahnaf مذهب. he devoted his attention to the study of the Ahnaf and eventually jaoined the Hanafi مذهب.
