A close emotional bond between 2 people (primary caregiver and an infant). It is a 2 way process that develops over time.

Any person who is providing care for a child such as a parent, grandparent, sibling or childminder

Reciprocity
Responding to an action of another with a similar action. Where the actions of one partner produce a response from the other.

Interactional Synchrony
When 2 people interact the tend to mirror each others actions. E.g. facial expressions & body movement

Meltzoff & Moore
-Adult showed 3 facial expressions to an infant. -Baby had a dummy so couldn't respond. -Dummy was removed and infants response was filmed. -Found an association between the adults facial expressions and the baby's behaviour

Problems when testing infant behaviour. Mouths are in fairly constant movement. Hard to tell whether it is general movement of imitated behaviour. Showed an observer who didn't know the expressions that the infant had been shown.

Another way of testing the imitation of infant behaviour is to use inanimate objects. 2 objects, tongue/mouth action. Little effect on 5-12 weeks old. Don't just imitate anything it is a social response to human behaviour.
